SPECIAL BOAT TRIPS

History of the Coast Guard with John Galluzzo

Come aboard Naumkeag to explore the significant role of the Coast Guard in Salem and the surrounding communities. John Galluzo, a Coast Guard historian, will be leading this special harbor tour that will allow guests to get up close and personal on the water with sites that played a significant role in the fascinating military history of the county. From it's early role in protecting Salem's bustling trade activities, to keeping watchful eye out for German Submarines during WWII, the Coast Guard was instrumental in keeping Americans safe. From both a local and national perspective, the story of the U.S. Coast Guard in Salem is one worth hearing and a portion of ticket sales from this tour will be donated to the Coast Guard History Foundation. 

This tour lasts 1 hour and 30 minutes

Discovering the Geology of Salem Sound

​Explore the geological history of Salem Sound.
This 2.5-hour trip will include an overview of the geological history of Salem Sound. The trip includes a boat ride aboard Naumkeag and a walking tour of the shoreline of Misery Island. During this excursion, Dr. Lindley Hanson and Dr. Sara Mana will illustrate the extensive geologic history of the area which include igneous rocks ranging from ~610-200 million years that have been subsequently brittly deformed and whose topography expression has been modified by millions of years of erosion and more recent glaciations. Additionally, during our stop at Misery Island, we will have an opportunity to investigate some of the techniques used to determine the relative age of events and discuss how we know what we know. Come enjoy the sights of Salem Sound and learn more about the geologic history of this area.

Monarch Waystation Tour at Bakers Island Light

Join Essex Heritage to learn about the process of creating monarch waystations at Bakers Island Light and how they attract migrating Monarchs. Essex Heritage's Manager of Future Resources, Charles Smith, will lead the group on a tour of the trails and gardens of Bakers Island Light to talk about the history of the light station and how Essex Heritage has worked to make the site more sustainable and plant native species to attract pollinators.
